I Claim Greatness
We all have greatness within us, so why do we feel the need to ask for permission to claim it?
JaMarr John Johnson, entrepremedian, transformative speaker, and the CEO of UpMind Media, opens up about his traumatic childhood. His last memory of his father was at three. Shortly after, his father was murdered, and his mother began looking for love in all the wrong places. She became addicted to drugs, leaving JaMarr feeling responsible for his siblings as they navigated living estranged from their mother.
JaMarr shares the pivotal moment in which he recognized he was put on this planet for more. He was listening to Napolean Hill who was talking about people going through life without awareness of their purpose. Hill was comparing this to a ship leaving shore destined to be lost at sea—you must know where you’re going in order to stay the course and arrive at the desired destination. This spurred JaMarr to arrive at the purpose of his life, "The purpose of my life is to bring joy, pleasure, and happiness to all those around me, to learn daily and achieve greatly, and always follow my divine creativity so that one day I can say I have helped as many human beings as humanly possible live a life of their own design so they may bring their gifts and talents onto the world."
He goes on to describe how his family healed and moved forward after his mother surrendered to her addiction and received the necessary help. Unfortunately, he still grew up with the absence of his father. When asked about other male role models in his life he commented, "None of the men around really took time to try and mentor or give tutelage to the neighborhood boys. It was really like you had one group of boys close to the end of their teenhood. We were following their lead. Some of them had fathers, some of them didn't. But literally, it was the blind leading the blind, so to speak."
Tune in to the full episode as JaMarr chronicles how he broke the cycle to claim greatness and live out his purpose. He knew he was destined for more.
Takeaways from this episode to stash in your tackle box:
Be open to therapy: individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy. It’s okay to seek help. A lot of healing can be accomplished by talking through the trauma.
You do not have to be a product of your environment. Figure out what’s accessible to you. There are public assistance programs available. You don’t have to subscribe to victimology.
Make learning a priority. Add skills to your tool belt. Skills pay the bills. The more you learn, the more you earn.
Ensure you’re fit in these four areas: physical, mental, spiritual, and financial. If one is lacking, do the work to get back on track.
Know your purpose. Live it out each and every day. As long as you keep trying you’re succeeding.
